Helpful Hints for Homeowners

Here are some general guidelines to follow for routine individual homeowner lot maintenance:

  1. Remove tree debris (i.e.:  leaves, twigs, limbs) and dispose of in a compost area or a county collection site.
  2. Either utilize a "mulching" or "bag" type lawn mower to recycle or remove grass clippings from lawn area.
  3. Monitor the road or street ditch lines to inhibit buildup and blockages (tree debris, litter, toys, etc.) that will decrease or eliminate the capacities for storm water conveyance and potential ponding issues.
  4. Avoid installing sheds, fences, recreation equipment or any type of structure in areas of drainage easements whether defined conveyance channels or sheet flow.
  5. Turn roof gutter downspout splash blocks with the raised end toward the yard area and elevate at the house foundation (to insure positive flow).  This will help to slow velocities and help eliminate washouts.
  6. Routinely monitor all drainage ways, whether natural or man-made; intermittent or perennial; for obstructions and eroding areas and respond/repair immediately.
  7. Inventory and maintain any area or item that may accumulate ponding water (i.e.:  empty flower pots, dog bowls, open boats, tires, tarps, any type of various containers, etc.) for mosquito control.
  8. Encourage neighborhood participation to address all previous items (1-7) above in common areas.
  9. In areas of ponding, installing yard inlets for captured storm water (available at most building supply stores) or trench drains for hydrostatic pressures (wet weather streams, high water table areas).  Insure that these installations will daylight (obtain sufficient grade) to an approved acceptable designated drainage are (i.e.:  recorded drainage swales, road or street ditch lines, etc.).
  10. Remember to be a good neighbor to the community and the environment.
